I heartily second the Friedwald recommendation.

Sophie's own book, "Some of These Days", published in 1945, is a rollicking good read as well. She's no scholar like Friedwald, but you can smell the greasepaint, and her life was as dramatic as her singing. They've got one in my local library; check yours.

If you like what Friedwald wrore in this Wall St. Journal article you might
want to pick up one of his finest books titled "Jazz Singing" "America's
Great Voices from Bessie Smith to Be-Bop." Will Friedwald Macmillan
Publishing Co. 1992. It's soft cover. Less than 15 bucks. 492 pages.
Highly recommended.

Al Simmons
