There never was a problem, and certainly not for dj's. The 7 inch small hole
33 rpm was, AFAIR, either classical or a (progressive) rock release,
beginning in the late 1960's. (Like this one)

But not dance music.
Later some punk bands, who always preferred the 7 inch, used 33 rpm to
squeeze in more noise.
But the format was rare, and even more so when 12 inch singles and EP's
started to appear in the mid 1970's.
Unless we talk about the Soviet Union, but...we don't.
