This is for DJs, who mostly spin 12" 45s, and don't want to have to change speeds (and worse, remember to change them back) when they're cutting something in. Also, the loudness of the 45 cut may be higher than the LP, more in line with the other stuff they have so they don't have to futz with the levels either.

Okay, now I've seen everything. Classic albums from the 50s and 60s now being 
reissued on 180 gm vinyl..at 45RPM in two-disc sets!?

Rene Leibowitz--The Power of the Orchestra
lots of Impulse stuff..man, we just loved getting up to flip discs at the 
halfway point. Now it's back to EPs.
