These days radio dj:s don't give a damn about licensing, because so much of
the music produced are unauthorized remixes of earlier recordings. The dj:s
get the remixes sent to them as mp3 files or "white label" CD:s (or even
vinyl) and use them just as they like. They even do it on the Beeb.
Some of this stuff is issued commercially on clandestine labels who, of
course, withhold the names of the producers. Pressings of 5000 copies aren't
unusual, but mostly the series are smaller and as long as it's a
"in-house"-business among dj:s and producers nobody gets upset. The artists
whose material is used see it as a sort of promotion. Or they're big enough
not to bother. The idea is: use well know songs, hits by big artists, and do
it tastefully, without offending the original artist. Then there's no
problem - neither for you, for the label or for the dj:s.
Mr Miller with his karaoke efforts on tape should also know this...
