"Arkansas" was named by Quebecois explorers, whose pronunciation
rendered the final "S" silent! An interesting paraller occured in Illinois
(another french name!), where there exists a literal "Ambraw" river...
which was most likely  the "Embarass" river (pronounced the same way
in French!

Note that this is NOT consistent...we have "de moyne" (Des Moines),
Iowa (should have been "de mwah, BTW?!)...but dess planes (Des
Plaines), Illinois!
