The basic rule concerning English (British) proper names is "Delete as many
letters as possible while leaving an easily-identified result!" IIRC, the 
name
you cite is spoken as "fanshaw?"

Some 60 years ago, when I began my "career" as a self-taught  reader of the
English language, I encountered a bottle of "Worcestershire" sauce...and was
left totally confused!
