I've never been able to get anything to play properly at this site - perhaps
others will have better luck!
Best wishes, Thomas.

Subject: Re: [JM] Earliest recording of "Hatikvah"
In response to Joel's query, the earliest recording of "Hatikvah" I have
documented so far is one recorded in Warsaw in 1902 by a certain Cantor
Kipnis. Discographical details are:
Record label: The Gramophone Company
Catalogue No. : 11654
Matrix No. : 631C
At the same session Cantor Kipnis also recorded the Zionist anthem 'Dort Wo
die Zeder' (There Where the Cedar) (Catalogue No. 11655; Matrix No. 632C).
What gives this recording added interest is that it may well have been made
by Menachem Kipnis (1878-1842), the legendary folklorist, pioneer
photographer, humorist and much else. At around about this time he was a
cantor at the Tlomacki Synagogue in Warsaw. Unfortunately, I have so far
been unable to establish the precise dates of his tenure there.
Hope this helps,
Mike Aylward
