The NY Times review states as follows, which, I presume, used as source the book that accompanies the CD:
"Even her real name was a nickname. Tucker, who came to the United States
from Russia as an infant, was born Sonya Kalish and raised as Sonya Abuza.
(The family name was changed at Ellis Island.) She settled on the stage name
Sophie Tucker after flirtations with various others, including Ethel Tucker
and Sophia Taylor."
My recollections, from reading Sophie Tucker's biography, was that the name Abuza was acquired when her father (who preceded Sophie and her mom in immigrating to the USA), at some point during his westward trek across Europe, encountered an Italian man, also seeking to get to the USA. They traveled together until the Italian guy became sick and died, after which Sophie's father took the identity paper of the Italian guy on the presumption that he would probably have a better chance in his quest with the Italian document rather than his own.
