Shainghai Victors were, of course, marketed at the foreigners in Shanghai. Mind you, there were tens of thousands living in the huge 'Foreign Concessions' in Shanghai (first British 1842, then French 1847, later US American 1863, finally Japanese 1895). These Concessions were off-limits for Chinese (except a few, like servants and workers in the factories. The area of the 4 Concessions had a wall around and was well guarded by Chinese military. It was a middle-sized city, like a ghetto.
Come to think of it, after 1933 there were also many thousands German Jews in Shanghai, with an own newspaper, own cinemas (plural!), own food stores and restaurant, a publishing house for books etc.
Up until the conquest by Mao Tze Dong, Shanghai was more international than Chinese - which fact even reflects in today's mentality of the population and the economic boom of that city which exceeds that of others.
BTW, I have a TexMex Lydia Mendoza 78 on Chinese Victor with original sleeve (purple label).
