My Webster-Chicago Fonograf did once.  My father took the tubes out to
test them and put them back in the wrong place.  It started smoldering. 
I think it took out a resister.  But maybe I should have called the
Webcor the Corvair.  The Webcor I have is a bi-directional machine, and
the Corvair had a rear engine.  Both are weird.  Not as weird as the
Eicor with its rubber capstan -- that was the Tucker.

P.S.  Yes I know the rear engine on the Corvair is what killed Ernie
Kovacs.
