If we could go back in time,  we would see that most of the music played at 
any time in history was derivative or regurgitation of other stuff.

I think there will always be room for new versions and new "takes" on old 
styles and old songs...why else do we still get new records all the time of 
symphonic and so-called "classical" compositions?  I don't see that as 
anything different than a young singer or pianist doing an album of 
standards or even originals.
