I have the same urge...another group are those who condemn the TV version of
Amos 'n' Andy without ever having seen the brilliant cast of top-flight
black actors and actresses. As in all classic sit-coms, the focus is on
the goofiest characters in the show (Andy and Kingfish) who are surrounded
by normal types, including both black and white professionals. I have seen
about eighty episodes and not once did I see any white character even make a
reference to race in dealing with any other character. The wonderful
character actor Roy Glenn got repeated chances on Amos 'n' Andy to play
various figures of authority, including a newspaper publisher, president
of a real estate company, head coach of a large school, a famous actor on
the legit stage, etc. In the movies, he usually ended up as a butler or
some such...but also as Poitier's dad in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.
I have also heard of people who assume that the word "niggardly" has some
racial connotation, which it does not.
With so much real racism and causes for probable alarm, it seems a shame
for so many to focus on erroneous assumptions about things they don't even
know about.
