That's how I do it.  Just about anything with a hole in it will work.  About 8 ounces or so seems to work just fine, though I am concerned about whether the temporary flattening of the record might weaken the 'durium' coating and hasten the onset of cracking.  
 
These recorded better than I'd hoped except for the 2 with damage.  Those started a little late, past the damaged section.
