I'd ask you to take another Listen to 'Make Believe'. 
'Smoke Gets I Your Eyes' is indeed one of Kern's best; and more
sophisticated for its glorious 'middle-8' key change. 
But, for a lesson in MELODY writing, 'Make Believe' can't be beaten in my
opinion.

If I ever see a production of Show Boat, not the MGM version obviously, I
might 
find merit in it..as it is I've always considered the music bottom drawer
Kern. 
He did much better stuff in the 30s. Hard to top "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".
