[78-L] Record Changer (was Collectibles)

Between the time Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer ran the magazine and Richard Hadlock took over, there was a huge gap in the Record Changer's published issues. My research shows that the last Keepnews/Grauer edition was September 1955. There were no issues until Hadlock's first in January 1957. There were only three more: in February, March, and then another gap until the last issue in November. I have not seen the last issue (it is one of the few I still need to acquire).

Incidentally, Hadlock is still alive and living in the Bay Area.

I'm planning a report on Record Changer's history for the 2010 ARSC conference in New Orleans, an apt place since the bulk of RC's thrust was towards N.O. jazz. The issues are fascinating, especially during the time when the big pirating scandal broke out. This surrounded the Jolly Roger (the most appropriate record label title in history) label's unlicensed issuing of 78s on 10" LPs in the early '50s. The majors screamed self-righteous bloody murder, especially RCA, until it was discovered that it was RCA who did Jolly Roger's pressings! The turmoil that followed resulted in the debut of RCA's "X" reissue label and the beginning of Grauer's Riverside label.
