I figured it had to be something really long ago for it to have affected
Toscanini making any recordings, since he started with the La Scala Orchestra
around 1920.

I'm going to add two words to the original question, since one can't really be certain about history which never happened:
What disagreement do we most probably have to thank for the fact that we have any Toscanini records to listen to at all today?
another hint, which should do it for you:
As you've accurately determined, if the disagreement hadn't taken place, Toscanini would likely have perished before he had a chance to record anything.
