Maybe to get the duration determined, but usually run-throughs were
done to determine what might be problematic in terms of balances or
'blasting' (helping a singer learn where to lean into or away from the
horn) AFAIK.

I think it would have been helpful if they'd kept notes somewhere of
what key each song was recorded in.  Posting that on the labels would
have been great!  (Isn't there a Melba record where 'Key F' is on the
label?)
