A few things I have to say about Jackson to keep things in context:
He brought dance back to song in an era that had forgotten about Astair, 
O'Connor and Kelly and had made Travolta cliche
He was not a tough act to follow, he was impossible.
He put modern dance into the limelight, made it mainstream, socially 
acceptable, even attractive.
He made the careers of many people possible. His work spawned movies and 
musicals, millions of dollars of entertainment enjoyed by millions of 
people. "Flashdance" comes to mind.
