I heard a story from my wife's mother, Gloria Breese, Lou's Daughter.
She said the in the 40's Lou shared managers with Welk.
They were both offered the TV spot, and Lou declined. His wife Cappy
would have none of it. I'll wager that later, there were some regrets on
that decision.
I am beginning to accumulate more of Lou's later stuff. I used to think
he was pretty campy, perhaps in the same vein as Welk. Well, sweet it
is, primarily, but Lou was adept at allowing his musicians some creative
leeway, offering space for some nice hot improvised solos an occasion.
