On seeing this thread, I pulled out James's Capitol recordings from the mid-1950s, which are amazingly good. Beautiful sound, a lot of the same musicians as in the earlier Columbia sides (Allen Reuss, Willie Smith, Buddy Rich) and great arrangements.

Indeed, when the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati ejected their 78 
pm collection in 1988 th

ity they are so prevalent, as they are really very good records, but they 
urvive in such high numbers that makes them undesirable. I also tend towards 
is later LP albums from "The New James" on -- no one suspected he would become 
uch an outstanding bop player; moreover he retained the same measure of 
xpressiveness and bravura that makes his early work so exceptional. I can do 
ithout the string section he had in the early 40s; indeed, so could have James 
s he once noted, but it was there for commercial purposes.
