That reminded me of a film called "Sidewalks of London"/"St. Martin's 
Lane", in which Leigh affects an atrocious Cockney accent, as does 
Charles Laughton. Cockney seems to be beyond English and American 
actors! Bob Hoskins's is the stage megaphonic version.

Edmund Gwenn maintained his English accent, except he spoils it by using 
the short 'a'.
