The term "ballad" has changed much over the years. Today, people think of it as meaning a song with a slow tempo. In folkloristic terms, it means any song that tells a story.

After more surfing it does seem that the Cousin Emmy and her Kinfolk version
was from the 1947 Decca 78 album "Kentucky Mountain Ballads". It threw me
at first because I didn't feel that RUBY was a ballad. I guess it depends
on your definition of "ballad".
