BBC's Radio London (as opposed to the pirate station with the same name that
closed down in August 1967) started to broadcast on October 6th 1970 and had
an entirely different concept, compared to the rock pirates.
BBC's Radio 1 though, commencing in 1967, was a fairly successful attempt to
serve young audiences with the latest music and young dj's (many of them ex
pirate dj's).
And the influence of the majors wasn't big enough to prevent ex Radio London
dj John Peel to present his "Top Gear" show (and the following John Peel
show, John Peel Sessions etc) where he played independent rock music until
the day of his death in 2004.
