More info from the LOUIS ARMSTRONG ON THE SCREEN book - the number was cut
solely to bring the running time of the film down. Nothing to do with race.
Since the number was a self-contained segment, it was easy to lose. The
producers wanted to add more footage of costar Beatrice Lillie and so cut
other portions of the film. Since Louis's appearance had been promoted in
the black press, theater owners in
black neighborhoods were given the option of a print with the number
included.
