My understanding at the time was that Schwartzkopf (sp?) sang the  
high notes for Flagstad. I do recall an final high note being very  
crudely substituted for a popular singer on television around the  
same time. She must have been ready to kill the engineer. The  
substitution of voices in Italian films is not uncommon.
