Acoustical recordings have a charm to them, which is one of the reasons
some people like Eldridge R. Johnson resisted the (more natural) sound
of electrical recording because "it didn't sound like a phonograph"!

I agree - I love acoustical recordings, especially when well made. I can
listen to a lot of Victor pop & classical items at one sitting, but a batch
of Paramounts can be wearing! Speaking of King Oliver's "Snake Rag," just
last night I was watching a 1963 episode of Ralph Gleason's JAZZ CASUAL TV
series, with Louis Armstrong as guest. Gleason played several of Louis'
1920s recordings to get his reaction, "Snake Rag" among them. Oddly, the
reproduction of the Gennett recording on this old videotape was clearer than
most CD reissues I have!
