I had time to think on this subject today and it occurred to me that we
have failed to place ourselves in the time an in the place. First, when
they went to the theaters or turned to the radio or the record player
for entertainment, the last thing they wanted to hear was bad news. They
wanted to be entertained, to be made happy for at least a short time, to
temporarily forget their troubles.
So, no there was not a lot of dwelling on the bad things that were
happening.
But there was
"Somewhere Over The Rainbow"
Songs of hope and optomism. Songs of encouragement.
There were silly musicals, with dancing and encouraging messages
such as Fred Astair and Ginger Roger's first one together,
Swing Time.
So, no there was not a lot of talk about the depression, but it certain
that the subject was not far from hand.
