It was separate at one time. And that's the way it was.
In Sengstock book, Toddlin' Town, there were only a few instances of 
racial mingling in those days. But they did exist. There is no doubt 
that a lot of great jazz came from whites, but there has to be some 
acknowledgement of Jazz origins.
During Lou's years at the Chicago Theater, the great black acts like the 
Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers were given center stage, but still had 
to change their clothes under the stage, not in the dressing rooms upstairs.
