This comment is more about Europe than the United States and does  
illustrate class difference as well. A brief look at all the  
transcriptions done by Franz Liszt, including all the Beethoven  
symphonies, illustrates what went on before radio and the phonograph.  
Educated people went to social events with sheet music under their arms.
