[78-L] Getting more mileage from a tune

I just bought a copy of  "So Does Your Old Mandarin" (Harmony 118-H)
The same song was issued on the lead label, Columbia by Paul Specht.

Was it common practice by record companies to offer more or less 
competing versions of the same song?

Perhaps one was more toned down than the other, less "hot"?
