I was just lucky enough to acquire a 78 by Somethin' Smith and the
Redheads on UK Fontana - I'm Gonna Wrap Up All My Heartaches / Ev'ry
Night At Nine O'Clock (Fontana H.112). It appears that it is one that
didn't make it on on 78 in the USA (just the 45 on Epic 5-9247),
although it possibly did in Canada, since it was 1958.

Now I must admit that have I never heard anything by them. I bought
the record cause of the cool group name, which seems more R&B than
pop, and the fact it was on Fontana, a label not known for 78s. (Hey
-- if that's not the sign of a collector I don't know what is!)

Anyway -- I have done a small lbit of research and want to ask some
opinions. I have read that the orchestra was actually Ray Conniff
under the name Jay Raye - but that this has not been a proven fact.
Any thoughts?

Finally -- I have also read just a bit about the group -- 4 guys from
UCLA - pop -- unique sound. But that's about all. Are they more akin
to the Treniers or the Four Lads?

Oh -- did a Canadian 78 on Epic exist?

Tony
