Cary,

New Masses was only involved with the 1938 concert.
The 1939 concert was sponsored by the Theater Arts
Committee, which may have had plans for a third, but
Hammond's autobiography does not mention any
such plans.

Info about the Committee may probably be found at the
wonderful Tamiment Library:

Good luck.

Doug

Does anyone have information on a proposed third annual edition of
the "From Spirituals to Swing" concerts, promoted by New Masses
magazine? I have some information that a concert was being planned in
Los Angeles at the Philharmonic Auditorium in November 1940 but it
never came off.

Cary Ginell
