Prior to the "swing era," customers bought records of SONGS they
liked...with little attention paid to the artists...! There were a few
exceptions to this (i.e. Crosby, Jolson. usw.) but many dance
records used standard stock arrangements...and some were even
by the same BANDS!
Once "swing" became the rage, record buyers wanted not just ANY
record of a hit tune...they wanted specifically the HIT version of the
tune! By the time rock'n'roll hit, this became the usual pattern...!
