Speaking of divas, I finally found a copy of "I Like You Because You
Have Such Loving Ways" by Lucille Hegamin and her Blue Flame Syncopators
on Arto 9068 (rec. NYC 05/21). It is in V- condition, not quite as good
as advertised, but I'm happy with it because it's the original, not the
even-worse copy I've heard duplicated in various places.
Anyhow, I've been happily applying digital trickery to it after making a
transfer with a Shure 8X stylus mounted in a Shure M97 cart. It's an LP
stereo needle, but I got better results using it than any of the various
78 needles I usually use for transfers.
Anyhow, the point of all this is that the only other musician to record
the tune (as "I Like You" on October 4, 1933) was Sol Hoopii and the
Novelty Quartette on Br 6787. Problem is Sol's version was plagiarized!
Hegamin's version, recorded some 12 years before, gives writer's credit
to W. H. Farrell & I. Hatch; Sol's version shows it as Long - Koki
(that'd be Andy Iona (Long) and Sam Koki). And there's no doubt it's not
only the same chord progression, but part of the lyrics are identical,
as well.
I've not come across such a case before and I'm glad to have a copy of
the original.
Sol's version is the better of the two, though. Much peppier!
I must check the Fox Agency and see if both are listed.
Curious.
