Flip Wilson who did the same thing as late as the 1980s. He was basically a modern version of the minstrel "coon." A huge success in his day; you can still catch reruns of Wilson's variety show on stations like TV Land.

In Britain we have a comedian named Sacha Baron Cohen who plays a
character called Ali G who talks in an exaggerated "Black" style, i.e.
inner city street language. Black audiences love it. Admittedly he
doesn't adopt the stereotypical slothful, indolent images of yesteryear.
