Talk of Jack Denny reminded me of the Herbert Gordon Orch. Brunswicks from
1928 and 1929, which are terrific and several of them are very jazzy. I've
often seen/heard mention of their versions of Jericho or Canoe-dle-Oodle but
the best of the sides is among the most obscure: I Could Do It For You (Br
4584)...among its virtues is a superb tart-toned clarinet solo which would
have done credit to any of the well-known Chicago players like Tesch or
Russell.
There also seems to be some sort of record-collector Urban Legend that
Goodman is on some of these Gordon sides, esp. the aforementioned Jericho.
Neither my ears nor my head will buy that theory.
Thoughts/comments/dissent?
