*"no where did I see a claim that these styli are truncated."

I add:

Stylus size and shape (conical, elliptical, truncated elliptical) are important considerations.

Generally, I find that that elliptical and truncated elliptical styli in sizes of 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.3, and 3.5 mils will extract good sound from 78's in "reasonable to excellent" condition. Matching stylus size and shape to record label/type, in my experience, is only a rough guide. It should not be relied upon. Determine the optimal playback styli size and shape for a 78 is wonderful but timely "trial and error" adventure.
