Never mind the critics (I'm one myself) - it's all about interpretation. Why 
would artists endorse other artist to interpret their work? To be able to 
say: "Ha! I did it better!"?
No. A good interpretation always adds something to the work - and sometimes 
the composer or dramatist or poet discovers new qualities he/she wasn't 
aware of or was unable to explore.
Ravel's word is just an opinion in this case. Certainly more interesting 
than yours or mine, but not more interesting than the opinion of a qualified 
conductor or (classical) musician.
