I wonder what his complaint was. Usually Ravel objected to any change
in tempo, but when I got the broadcast Toscanini played it on I compared
the opening and closing tempo and they were identical.

Yeah, but the sole Toscanini 1939 broadcast of "Bolero" that exists has some
horrifying bloops from the orchestra - the Masetro must have given the
musicians hell afterwards!
