Gents,

   Just off the top of my head I *think* Americans tended towards "The World
War" while subjects of the British Empire and /or other European Allies
preferred "The Great War" What did the Central Powers refer to it as? It
bear further looking into!
   One example is Eddie Cantor's line in *Whoopee* ',"...I suppose to him
the World War was just a typographical error!"
    I remember getting detention in high school when I disagreed with the
teacher when he said WWI ended in 1918 and I said it actually didn't end
until 1920 when the Treaty of Versailles took effect, but actually I guess
it was 1923 when a treaty was finally signed by Turkey!
