Just out of curiosity, how do countries that straddle the equator choose
which sequence of seasons to follow-the north or the south?

Countries that straddle the equator, and even those that are some distance from it but have tropical climates do not follow seasons of areas further to the polar regions. They generally have what are designated as rainy and dry seasons, although equatorial regions may not exhibit much difference throughout the year. Destruction of rain forests along with other contributors to global warming, however, are having an effect on the length of the rainy and dry seasons.
As for autumn songs, there's one titles AUTUMN by Richard Maltby with lyrics by Barbara Streisand.
AUTUMN BLUE - James Melton
If you go to the ASCAP web site, you'll find about 10 pages of songs titled AUTUMN and an addition extremely long list of songs beginning with the word AUTUMN.
