I should say that I am referring to the recordings made with Django. I'm
sadly unfamiliar with his later recordings. Judging by some of the comments
here, I better go and have a listen!

Probably controversial... I always found Grappelly's improvisational skills
rather limited. He certainly could swing and had a great technique, but to
my ears there were not many surprises; mainly clichés in fact. Django, in
comparison was extraordinarily creative.

Hardly.

 I much prefer Venuti's habit of staying somewhere near the written melody, 
while GrapeJelly wanders all over the place in self-indulgent trills and 
tricks.
Even in old age, Venuti tended NOT to pretend he knew better than the 
composer - he embellished & stretched & 'swung' the piece, without trying to

make up his own tune.
