This subject was brought up on the alt.movies.silent Usenet group a few times--on 14 Sep. 2004 Bob Birchard had the following to say about "MOS":
"In fact the term MOS (which legend has it stands for Mit Out Sound--a bastardization by a german director who wanted to shoot a scene without sound) actually stands for Minus Optical System and was put on the slate to let the assistant editor know there was no track for the scene and that he/she should roll in unmodulated track when synching the dailies."
But yeah, the legend is more amusing!
