Indeed - As a matter o' fact, listening to Vi 35677 again, this "jazz" is
also totally "punk" - the energy is unbelievable. It seems to look forward to
the Sex Pistols as much as the ODJB (Nick La Rocca meets Sid Vicious)! The
Victor orchestra sure never made any records like this on their own.
Nat Shilkret was involved with Victor from 1914, but - according to NS
himself - only in the "foreign" department until the '20s. Doesn't anyone have hard
info about this session?
According to the Internet Broadway Data Base, "Rainbow Girl" ran from April
1st, 1918 to sometime in August, for an impressive total of 160 performances.
This VLOC side was likely done early in the run, in April of '18 - VERY early
in the game for anything like "jazz" on Broadway! "Mister Drummer Man" - the
number played by the "Jazz Orchestra" - was a vocal duet in the actual show.
There was also a number called "Alimony Blues" and another called "Soon
We'll All Be Seen Upon the Screen." - very up-to-the-minute stuff for mid-World
War One.
