Somehow I just managed to mis-key my keyboard and erase some 45 emails I
received overnight, some personal but mostly from 78-L and the ARSC
list. I was permanently erasing some drivel or another (spam) and a
finger slipped and there went all my new emails.
So, if anyone sent anything to me personally, and it was importance,
please resend it.
Thanks,
Malcolm

Like the euro, pound and cents sign previously requested, those are not
part of the HTML1 alphabet so may be inconsistent depending on the
user's typeface. Unfortunately, the ess-zed sent by many German
keyboards is not the beta which is very similar and standard. As a
result, if you send beta to a German, it will seem right, but his
ess-zed will probably be wrong to you.
Many characters which look similar or identical have different ASCII
values in at least some alphabets. Hyphen and en-dash are obvious
examples, but there are more. E-mailing from MSWord to anyone not using
that program often stumbles on those.

Thanks, Howard,
But I forgot to say I'm using an eMac
In the meantime, I've found the Spanish opening interrogation mark: Alt
+ Shift + ? = ?
I can't wait to get back to a regular PC.

? is Alt + 168 in the PC world. I have the table with higher ASCII
characters in front of me. Don't know how HTML translates that,
however.

Depends on which basic layout you are using (yes, the "country" layouts do
affect the numerical block as well!) - on my German Windows, ? is ALT+0161,
while ALT+0173 is ? (the minus sign).

Harry,
The main problem with using Insert>Symbol, and then searching in the chart
is, you usually cannot see where the desired symbol will be entered. You
have to preset the location, go through all that jazz, preset the next
location, ad infinitum, ad nauseam! I find it much easier to prepare a file
page of diacritical marks and how to access them with Alt + nnnn, and then
print it out, so it is always available. As to the Special Symbols, that's
another story!
Incidentally, you can save a couple of steps by right clicking on the upper
toolbar in Word, click on Customize, and then find the Symbol icon, and put
it up into your toolbar somewhere. Saves at least two steps.

Dave,
Now why didn't I think of that? I google everything else! But how
complete is it? And which fonts does it support. Incidentally, if you use
the correct font, you can get all of the Cyrillic letters. Of course,
there's always Alphabetum.

I've noticed 3 prefix designations LX LVA LXA on the 10-inch "X" label
issues.
All are 3000 series catalog numbers, and for the few I've tracked, have
not seen overlap of the numbers.
Is there a complete listing of these issues available online, or from
someone on the list? Can anyone confirm
that the numeric part of the catalog number (i.e. without the prefix) are
unique?
Thanks!
Best wishes, Thomas.

For texts involving more than one language (also for e-mail viewing) I
prefer "Arial Unicode" font (NOT identical with "Arial" !) - gives a very
clear and legible printout down to very small font sizes if necessary, and
includes literally *everything* including Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese and
Chinese characters. This is a proprietary Microsoft font AFAIK, and I have
no idea if there is an equivalent for Mac/Linux users. If you use a
non-Unicode font (i.e. one with a less-than-complete array of characters),
your software will either display missing characters as little empty boxes
or query marks, or will "borrow" them from a (theoretically) similar-looking
font that has them, which can easily make your text look more like a
cut-and-paste blackmail letter job, and often throws your settings for
spacing and tabs....
